"Marty's Take" GGs-Mac

Gee Gees vs. McMaster

A wet first half was a struggle for both teams, but crisp tackling by the Gee-Gees kept Mac in cheque ( no first down till way into the 2nd Quarter ) The Gee-Gees had a number of drives stalled by penalties , turnovers & missed field goals.

The rain stopped at half-time & both teams changed QB's with positive results.

Newcomer Sawyer Buettner brings mobility to the position, something that Alex Lavric lacks.

Although Mac scored a TD, two late drives by Ottawa led to a pair of TD passes by Sawyer. Mac could not respond.

Bryce Vieira put on a show as both a runner & a receiver totaling nearly 200 yds by himself .

Mac may have slipped a notch, but the Gee-Gees were by far the better team.

Of concern is place kicking. Campbell Fair is batting only .500, all from inside the forty ( we have been spoiled by Falvo & Ward ) The Gee-Gees lead the league in penalties which is never good.

Coach Barresi would be wise to limit using Vieira too much, tempting as it is. Although he his big of heart, he is small of frame, and his 'scratch & claw' running style leaves him open to more than his share of punishment. Also Beaver & Matheson need to be more involved in the offence.

Cannot say enough about the defense & the work of Harry, Spooner & newcomer Hamidi.

Around the league: Carleton (1-1) over Windsor(0-2); Guelph (1-1) over York (0-2);

Laurier (2-0) over Queens (1-1) & Waterloo (2-0) over Toronto (0-1). WEstern had the bye.

NEXT UP: Guelph @ Ottawa, Saturday, September 8th , 1:00 p.m.

LAST 5 MEETINGS:  Gee-Gees 4-1

EXPECTATIONS:

A couple of last minute wins by the Gee-Gees  before last year's Quarter-final stomping by the Gryphons. This shoud be another close one.

Go Gee-Gees
